Grocery and Dining Costs in Portugal

In Portugal, you can shop for groceries at relatively low prices. Here’s an idea of common costs:

  • A liter of milk: as low as €0.65
  • A 6L bottle of water: starting at €0.75
  • A 33cl bottle of local beer: from €0.59

Some of the best supermarkets in Portugal for essentials include Pingo Doce, Mini Preço, Lidl, Auchan, and Continente.

Additionally, you can shop at local markets for food and other items. Prices remain low, and these markets are a great way to experience Portuguese culture.

If you enjoy dining out, that’s affordable too! Here’s what to expect:

  • Affordable restaurant: €8–10
  • Fast food: from €5 per person
  • Fine dining: €20–25 per person

Many places also offer student discounts, so take advantage!

Transportation Costs in Portugal

Not sure how to get around in your new city? Here’s a breakdown of transportation options in Portugal:

Lisbon:

  • Monthly Pass: €30–40/month. A €40 pass gives you unlimited access to all public transport across the Lisbon District (including areas like Setúbal, Sintra, and Cascais). Within Lisbon City only, the pass is €30/month. Students may qualify for discounts! The card itself has a one-time fee of €7.
  • Occasional Travel: €1.50 per trip. Buy a Viva Viagem rechargeable card (€0.50) and load it as needed. A single trip by metro, tram, or bus costs €1.50.

Lisbon’s metro system is one of the cleanest and best-maintained in Europe, offering the fastest way to travel across the city. Local buses are also convenient, and the iconic trams are a must-try! The famous Tram 28, known for its scenic routes through steep and narrow streets, is especially popular. Use a Viva Viagem card for tram rides, as single tickets purchased onboard cost €3.

Porto:

  • Monthly Pass: €30–40/month. The PVC Andante Card (€6) is required for monthly passes. A €40 pass covers unlimited travel within the metropolitan area (zones Z1–Z9), while a €30 pass is valid for zones Z1–Z3.
  • Occasional Travel: from €1.25. Use the Andante Azul Card (€0.60) for pay-as-you-go trips. Costs vary by zone, with a single trip in Zone 1 priced at €1.25.

  • Rede Expressos Buses: A trip from Lisbon to Albufeira (Southern Portugal) costs €10–17, depending on the schedule.
  • CP Trains: A train from Lisbon to Albufeira takes 3 hours and costs €21.10 (Intercity Train). Early bookings may reduce the fare to €13. CP Trains

Healthcare Costs in Portugal

We recommend getting a Healthcare Number when you arrive in Portugal, giving you access to the National Health Service (SNS). Only small fees, called moderation fees, apply:

Private healthcare is also available, with the following costs:

  • Specialist consultation: €45–120
  • Emergency care: ~€100

A health insurance policy may cover up to 50% of private healthcare costs.
