One of the best places to build a student community around you is Asprela – we really like it here because it’s a great neighbourhood close to many of the major universities, including ISEP (Porto School of Engineering), IPP and FEP. A lot of students also live in the city centre, where they can be close to the cafes, bars and attractions, or in neighbourhoods such downtown (10 min. by metro).
Porto is fairly easy to walk around – it’s a small city, so you could explore most of it in three days. That said, there are many cobblestone streets and steep hills – if you’re able-bodied and wear supportive, comfortable shoes it should be fine, but otherwise you could buy an Andante Card. This gives you unlimited use of the metro, buses and trains throughout the city. It is an extremely affordable way to explore if you find it difficult to explore on foot.
Porto is considered a very safe city, but as in any city, you should exercise a reasonable amount of caution in public. The centre is well-lit and safe to walk around, but avoid dark alleys and take a taxi home if it’s especially late and if you’re quite intoxicated. Pickpocketing and bag snatching is occasionally reported, but stay vigilant of your personal belongings in crowded areas and you should be fine.
The cost of living for students is very reasonable in Porto, especially compared to Lisbon and other big European cities. To live a comfortable life in Porto, we recommend trying to ensure that you have about €500 after rent – this will easily cover your food shopping, especially if you’re more inclined to cook for yourself, as well as utilities, transport and social activities.
Porto is one of the best cities for students who want to study in Portugal. Considered one of the friendliest cities in Europe, Porto is wonderfully accommodating – people will help you while you’re learning Portuguese and do their best to make you feel comfortable as you acclimatise to your new home. Porto is a delight to get to know, with stunning colourful architecture and a wide array of great restaurants, bars, green spaces and activities to do.
